Seville, September 20, 2018. Puerto de Indias Premium Gin has celebrated its fifth anniversary this evening at Seville’s Pabellón de la Navegación with around 900 distribution, catering and HORECA professionals, as well as representatives from public institutions, suppliers, partners and workers at the Seville brand in attendance. This event coincides with the publication of the latest report by the International Wines and Spirits Record (IWSR), which analyzes the sales of spirits worldwide from 2013 to 2017 and positions Puerto de Indias as the ninth most consumed gin in the world.
In just five years since its creation in 2013, Puerto de Indias has sold more than 15 million bottles and represents more than half (55%) of the national consumption of pink gins in a market in which more than 70 new brands based on this variety of strawberry have emerged as a result of its creation. In addition, in the last two years, the Seville gin has multiplied its international sales by 2,000 in more than 25 countries, an expansion that has been strengthened by the acquisition last year of a share by H.I.G. Capital fund.
Quality employment and local development
Puerto de Indias started its activity in September 2013 with only four workers following an unsuccessful attempt to create a pastry product. It caused a paradigm shift in the gin sector that gave rise to a completely new category: the pink gin. At present, Puerto de Indias now has a team of more than 100 people, 65% of whom have an indefinite contract, making the company a relevant source of employment for Carmona. In addition, an average of 100 temporary employees participate each month in specific marketing actions for the brand throughout Spain.
The close links between the founders of Puerto de Indias with their locality has led them to maintain and expand their facilities in the same location. In this way, growing production needs led the company in 2017 to acquire a 15,000 square metre plot in Carmona where, at the end of 2019, a new 9,500 square metre plant is scheduled to start operating. “The new facilities will make us one of the largest distilleries in Andalusia and will allow us to increase production, transfer the bottling process and have an adequate-sized warehouse for supplies”, explains José Antonio Rodríguez. That way, the old facilities will be used to continue distilling the strawberry, as well as to promote industrial tourism.
Since 2013, the growth of Puerto de Indias has been exponential, going from selling around 200,000 bottles at the end of its first year to exceeding 5 million in 2017. During that period of time, it has managed to attain 5% of the total consumption of gin in Spain. “We created a product that did not exist: the first strawberry gin in the market,” explains José Antonio Rodríguez, founding partner of the brand.
To commemorate the five years since its creation, the Seville firm has organized an event this evening at the Seville Pabellón de la Navegación. It has been hosted by the speaker and presenter Pepe Da-Rosa and has featured thes founding partner of Puerto de Indias, José Antonio Rodríguez, as well as the sales manager, Javier Barnés. They dedicated a few words of thanks to all the people who have supported the gin and made its growth possible.
The guests enjoyed a festive atmosphere full of light, colour and live music. They learnt about and tasted the new range of perfect serve drinks made from the different varieties of the brand’s premium gin for the forthcoming autumn-winter season.
About Puerto de Indias
Puerto de Indias is a premium gin made in Carmona (Seville). It is one of the oldest and most traditional distilleries in Andalusia. Its name is related to the discovery of America and a time when Seville became one of the main ports for the exchange of goods between Spain and the New World.
It makes three varieties of gin: Pure Black Edition – 40% and intense in flavour; Strawberry, a pioneer in its sector with an intense aroma of strawberry; and the recently re-launched Classic – 40% with a fresher recipe with more citrus flavour.
The combination of know-how and innovation, coupled with the dedication to and care taken in its careful distillation process, have enabled the creation of a product with its own personality that is already in the consolidation and expansion phase in the international market.
